Commissioner of Oaths in Brampton
If your form says “before a Commissioner of Oaths”
A Commissioner for Taking Affidavits — commonly called a commissioner of oaths — is authorised to administer oaths, take affirmations and witness solemn declarations in Ontario. If a form tells you to sign “before a Commissioner of Oaths” or “before a Commissioner for Taking Affidavits”, this is the service you need.
Sweta Bajaj is a Licensed Paralegal with the Law Society of Ontario and a Certified Notary Public, based in Brampton. In Ontario, licensed paralegals and lawyers are commissioners by virtue of their licence.
Commissioner of oaths, or notary public?
People search for one and need the other, so here is the practical difference.
Both a commissioner and a notary public can administer oaths and affirmations, and both can witness affidavits and statutory declarations.
Only a notary public can certify a copy as a true copy of an original, or notarize a document for use outside Canada.
The short version: if your document stays in Canada and just needs to be sworn, a commissioner is enough. If you need a certified true copy, or the document is going to another country, you need a notary public.
Sweta is both, so you do not have to work out which one you need before you arrive. Bring the document and the right service gets applied.
